Here are the results for the Tournament, congratulations to the winners and better luck
next time to everyone who didn't place or manage to get out.  Either way we hope you had fun at the Prize-giving!

The inaugural Fish City Snapper Open Tournament is now embedded in history. Despite horrific weather forecasts leading up to the tournament, we were rewarded with 48 hardy souls registering on Thursday night at Fish City. This was a much better than expected turn-out given the weather forecast but also an demonstration of the commitment of these guys to supporting Fish City and The Waikato Sportfishing Club’s first new tournament in quite a number of years.

So the weather was horrific and the fishing was very average, but it would be fair to say the prize-giving was a stand-out success. In my time at the helm of Waikato Sportfishing Club, I’ve never seen the clubrooms as full as they were Sunday night and the buzz all around the room was something to behold. Combine that with the very pleasant views of the river, well stocked bar and an awesome catered roast meal a few more weighable fish was all that we could have asked for.

Once registrations were done , we held a quick briefing it was all on for young and old to spread forth across new Zealand to do battle with fish of gargantuan proportions, oh yeah and the 30-50 knot winds for Friday and Saturday.

Some of those that battled the elements on Friday and Saturday were rewarded while most struggled. Sunday morning dawned bright, clear and windless and some took the opportunity to make a quick dash to their favourite spot before having to make the dash back to Hamilton. For some this strategy worked very well and indeed yielded the two winning Snapper  and Kahawai (Heaviest Other Sportfish!).

Hardluck story of the day would have to go to The Dingle and Joynes families on the good ship Excalibur who left Hamilton at 3:00 am Sunday morning to launch at Waikawau, caught some nice fish for everybody on board, only to have to wait for over an hour at the Waikawau boat ramp to get back on their trailer and fly back to Hamilton.  They arrived 6 minutes after weigh in close off...

The other almost hard-luck story was that of Young Todd Higgs fishing with Dad and Grandad on Dad’s boat. He had a fish to weigh in but unfortunately it only went 36 cm against the minimum length for snapper of 40cm.

The final result was no fish weighed for Juniors and Small-fry and the prizes for those categories were drawn.  Fortunately natural justice prevailed and both Todd Higgs and Jake Dingle featured in the drawn prizes.

Here’s hoping for better weather next year.
Cheers
